Middle and Greater

There is no sign of spring on Dartmoor. There were a few skylarks singing on the lower slopes of the tor near the car park, but that was the only sign of life we saw until two crows flew past as we were getting back to the car. No ponies, no sheep. The wind was slashing through the still-yellow grass, which was flat to the ground with no sign of new growth. It was a very cold wind, which got colder and stronger as we walked up the slopes of the tor. The boulder you can see in the foreground is the last part of Middle Staple Tor and the tor in the background is Great Staple Tor. We followed the path up to it and once we reached its shelter, it felt like the wind had been switched off. Unfortunately, to get back home for a cup of tea, we had to walk back down again! We didn't stay up there for long,
