Mount St Cemetery

I go to Victoria University of Wellington before I explain the photo I think I'll give you a wee history on the university:

Back at the very beginning of the 1900s the founders of the university needed a permanent site for the university. The uni was then bribed by a £1000 donation by the cable car company on the condition that the university was built on empty land on Kelburn Hill so that the students would give the cable car company patronage. Thus the university is built at the top of a series of bloody steep hills making students and lectures alike hate the fore-founders. The cable car by the way still runs today, over 100 years later so I guess they earnt back their £1000 donation and then some!

Anyway back to the photo: As a result of the university being built on a hill there was limited space and as the need for more room has arisen the university has expanded all over the sides of the hill, one of those sides was on Mount St directly next to the Mount St Cemetery. To this day the cemetery remains, however no longer can any dead be buried there. You can walk through this old cemetery to the CBD and one of the paths and the student union building runs about 4 meters to the left of this photo.

Anyway I liked this photo, its of one of the grand old graves, and the bright light on one side gives it a bit of a spooky feel.
