Honeybees need water especially now

In late Winter and early Spring bees can find some sources of pollen (protein), but at this time of year there are few plants yeilding nectar (energy), so the bees use the honey they have stored in their hives. Honey is very concentrated - over 80% sugar - which means it keeps well but needs diluting with water for the bees to make best use of it. So you will often see bees collecting water to take back to the colony, A tray of wet gravel gives them a safe drinking place. You should never put out honey or honey water with the mistaken view that you're helping the bees. Most shop bought honey is imported, and carries bee diseases and pesticide residues and can cause many problems.
