Temple of the Four Winds

We had a walk on the castle Howard estate today. We hoped to avoid the mud but hadn’t accounted for tree felling which had churned up the tracks.

This is the Temple of the FourWinds.  It was designed by Vanbrugh but was unfinished when he died in 1726. Finally the interior was finished in 1738 by Francesco Vassalli.
The temple was used as a reading room and refreshments were made by servants in the cellar below. Today it forms part of a walk and has wonderful views across to the Mausoleum and bridge on the estate.

I hope that the impending arrival of Eunice does not cause the predicted problems. It looks like the south west of the country is in for a rough ride.
