Sandstone Bluffs

Back blip. Rough, tough bush-wacking + hiking at El Malpais (the Badlands), New Mexico.  Began at elev. at 6,993' (2132 meters). Precarious hike to bottom of cliffs, 2.5 miles north on a non trail,up the north side of cliffs...2.5 miles back to car.  Arrived home exhausted (1.5 hr drive each way)
The black flat area in the distance of the main is the lava field 40 miles long and 10 miles across.

Lots pf extras mostly to show family what they're missing. But you can look, too.
1. Lava flow ends here. Lava spewed between 125,000 and 1,250 years ago.
2. G climbs the lava front
3. Giant hoo-doo...G's white pith helmet lower mid gives scale
4. Lunch spot, ate sugar pine sap for desert.  G emerges from the left
5. Holes...surely alien holes...dotted across the top of this particular hoodoo.
