Kings Canyon

About a 3 hour + drive on the Lasseter and Lurijita Highways from Uluru is Kings Canyon. You can walk the rim of the canyon which is about a 3 - 4 hour walk, is very well done and sign posted and the rangers should be congratulated. I highly recommend it and it gives a great view of the canyon and surrounding area.

This is a ghost gum on the top of the rim of the canyon. I love these gums. They stand out starkly white against the red rocks. The top of the canyon has these weathered domes which reminded me of Purnululu (the Bungle Bungles) probably formed by similar weathering processes. The rock is a sandstone (400 million years old) and I have not touched the vibrance or saturation here. The colour is what is was and the sky is what it was. As always in this region, it has been inhabited by Aborigines for thousands and thousands of years and has many sacred areas and legends that go with it.

What this shot does not show is the canyon too well, the rocks to the left and behind the gum are the otherside of the canyon and the view to the right of the tree is looking out over the plain back towards the town that time forgot. I won't go on too much about it but there is no mobile phone coverage, no satisfactory internet, or at least an internet I could upload a photo on and if you arrive at the only eating place (the Bistro at the Thirsty Dingo) outside of lunch hours (12 - 2pm) the most you will get is a pizza. Everything seems to be in long life packets. There was a huge fire here a few months back. It is amazing that the resort (that's a loose use of the word) where we stayed was not burned to the ground as you can see where the fire has come up to the back of the rooms. I wonder if they are still a little shell shocked by it.

We were warned of dingos and camels coming into town. I did see a dingo but no camels.

Sorry for the ramble.
