Audubon's Birds of America

I was in the centre of Edinburgh today for the first time in over two years, for an enjoyable visit to the ‘Audobon’s Birds of America’ Exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland.
Around 1820, naturalist John James Audubon declared his intention to paint every bird species in North America. The result was ‘Birds of America’ published between 1827 and 1838, featuring 435 life-size, hand coloured prints. It is a huge book at almost 1m high.
Audubon visited Edinburgh five times between 1826 and 1839 and the current exhibition features 46 original unbound prints from the museums collection alongside the bound copy, letters and taxidermy specimens.
