Soaperie Gardens

Today's the day ....................... to carpet

The crocuses are out just now, in glorious profusion in the Soaperie Gardens in the middle of Kirkcudbright.

The gardens are a public space between the Parish Church and St Cuthbert Street, where you can sit on benches or eat your picnic lunch at one of the tables.  Its name is derived from the fact that it was the part of the town given over to the manufacture of soap and candles from about 1790.

Back then it would have been rather an unpleasant place to be - smelly and boggy - with a stream running through down to the River Dee.  But today it was fragrantly purple with its carpet of flowers ......................
