So handy

Two ancient stones so close to home and I have never been to see them.

The Clifton Stones
These are two large sandstone megaliths sitting in a field next to the village of Clifton. And, as you can see, close to the M6 - so clever these ancients to put their stones close to the motorway making it easy for people to attend their gatherings.

When, in 1977, the smaller stone fell over, it was decided to cement it back in the same position and, whilst doing that, some excavation was carried out in the area revealing evidence of burials beneath a cairn. Then a further buried stone was discovered, which lined up with the winter solstice. This could put the stones in the Early Bronze Age time frame, when such stones were used to indicate the beginning of winter.

The stones are actually at a slight angle towards each other, although one has to get to the other side to see this. In the picture you can see why I was reluctant to do this.
