Change of plan

We had a particular walk planned today but when we arrived nearby, the temperature was only 9 degrees and it was raining so we drove on to the north of the island and parked next to the beach at Hermigua.
The two shots here were taken one after another and in the foreground show a natural swimming pool where sadly a 29 year old woman lost her life this week. We can only assume that the waves came in and swept her over the edge. She was rescued but didn’t survive.
In the back of the shot is the Davit.
At the end of the 19th Century, the island’s agricultural production changed from non perishable products such as cochineal to perishable products such as tomatoes. Given the need for rapid transportation of these products to Europe, the first davit, in Spanish, “Pescante” was built in 1907 by the Sociedad Anónima La Union made up of wealthy families and returned emigrants that made their prosperity in Cuba. The prisms built with stone and mortar, allowed the entry and exit of goods and people by sea.
After the end of the First World War, another larger davit was proposed comprised of six prisms of which only four were built due to the world crisis of 1929. The Civil war, Second World War and the arrival of communications by road erased the activity of the davit which ended up being dismantled in 1960.
The four prisms can be seen in the background. We are not quite sure how people and goods were transferred on to the boats as the sea looked so rough. This was our lunch spot today.
