Limerick day 3: Des Res

Just back from an epic few days in Limerick, staying in Ash Hill House - a mega 18C job - actually now only half it's size for one wing was dismantle in the 1960s when taxes got too ferocious. It was most imposing and delightful except - it was unbelievably cold, seriously brass monkeys! The rooms were vast and high ceiling but there was no heating, just a minute electric plug in thing which made no difference at all. No heating whatsoever in the bathroom and not much hot water so we were grateful for that large bed with the massive duvet and shutters at the window and remained pretty much unwashed! Even downstairs in the drawing room where a fire was lit, all the heat seemed to go up the chimney and none into the room. We were perishing yet heat oozed out of the family quarters and the massive hall seemed to have underfloor heating - we nearly lay down on it!
Nonetheless we had a great time, though each night there were mega gales and torrential rain, miraculously on our main day, Tuesday, the sun shimmered out after breakfast - around nine holy wells, two stone circles, a massive ruined abbey in a field and several churches explored.
I have to confess this photo was taken yesterday as the forecast today was dodgy. We didn't know quite how dodgy until we left this morning where we experienced every conceivable kind of weather possible - gales, rain, floods,  a good half an hour of snow between Buttevant and Mallow and then sunshine when we arrived home. Cream crackered.

And the house is very solitary in its parkland, the walled gardens having long gone.
