Breaking Free!

Today we had the first nor’wester for some time. The giant puffball, uprooted by the vigorous gusts, took off! All afternoon it explored nooks and crannies around the lawn before settling for the night under the kowhai tree. In this it was fulfilling its destiny, not simply sending spore on the breeze, but actually delivering it to the most suitable places.

It is very light, less than 200g. The image on the right is of its previously unseen bottom. It left a hole about 10cm wide by 5cm deep.

Now that the hero of this story has matured and left home it is time to draw this chronicle to a close.

The whole giant puffball saga. The thumbnails appear in reverse order- latest at the top. Where the puffball is not pictured in the thumbnail it will be the extra shot for that day.
