High Pike (Caldbeck)

Drove round the Back of Skiddaw again today to add another two of the Northern Fells to our Wainwright (2) round. Carrock Fell & High Pike. The climb up Carrock Fell was steep and quite exciting, added to by winds of over 40mph. When we managed to struggle to the top, we found a fell race going on, with runners turning on top of Carrock Fell - we could hardly stand up, and they were running!

Went on to High Pike (Caldbeck) - still ridiculously windy, The top is marked by a cairn, in this case, a huge structure that doubles as a wind shelter, though today the wind was blowing straight at the shelter entrance. The trig point has a plaque on the top marking the height, but the strangest item is the stone bench. Looking at the Wainwright book of the Northern Fells, he refers to a wrought iron bench up to 1960. But as sheep kept getting their horns stuck in it, it was replaced with this stone seat late 1960.

Carrock Fell: 149/214
High Pike: 150/214
