Latha Ghiogha

Today was the twentieth anniversary of the Gigha community buyout and I was glad to accept an invitation to attend the raising of the flag on the island to commemorate the event , and to lunch in the hotel afterwards.

The rain stayed off, the Kintyre Schools Pipe Band played and in a spontaneous gesture after the children of the primary school had sung , a home made Ukrainian flag was raised as well.

The last two decades have not been without their problems, and some of those remain, but the island's achievement is still very much worth celebrating.   Life would have been a lot worse - and the population a lot smaller - without the control that the community has been able to exercise.

We need more of that in Scotland.

I have a few more pictures of the event and the island on my Flckr site.
