Amelungsborn Abbey

…is the place of my father’s funeral today. The Cistercian abbey was founded in 1135 in a rural area of Lower Saxony, some 50 miles south of Hannover. After the Lutheran reformation the institution was transformed into a grammar school, which moved to Holzminden in 1760. My late parents attended this school in the 1940s, and my wife and I in the 1970s. In 1988 my father was admitted to the now Lutheran monastic family who meet regularly, and he worked on the history of the place, publishing several essays and a chronicle. Today he was buried in the abbey grounds. - The second extra is a wooden sculpture in front of Gilserberg café, our favourite resting place halfway home to Darmstadt.
