Time for quiet contemplation

We took a walk along Aldeburgh beach this morning where this 'love it or loath it' sculpture by Maggi Hambling ,The Scallop, stands. Erected in 2003 it is intended as a tribute to Benjamin Britten who made Aldeburgh his home
The piece is made up of two interlocking scallop shells, each broken, the upright shell being pierced with the words: "I hear those voices that will not be drowned", which are taken from Britten's opera Peter Grimes.

The end of a most difficult and emotional week when my dear father-in-law, who had also made Aldeburgh his home, died peacefully on Tuesday with family and friends around him.
