The War Memorial

This is the Grangemouth War Memorial designed by Scottish architect Sir John Burnett. Amongst Burnetts (and his practices) other work was the Kodak Building in London, the second and third phases of Selfridges in London, the Cenotaph in Glasgows George Square, two war Memorials at Gallipoli, another war memorial in Jerusalem, the Edward VII gallery at the British Museum and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

I doubt much off his work was as contentious as this piece. Completed in 1922 it is topped by a British lion devouring the German eagle. Even four years after the first world war is still caused a great stir on it's unveiling. It is probably THE architectural gemstone in an otherwise arid landscape. It's probably it's status as a war memorial that has kept it from being knocked down.

As a link to the present. They are currently excavating a mass grave of British and Australian servicemen in Fromelles. One of the men on that memorial may be in that grave.
