Memento Mori

I'm running a day late and will probably continue to do so!  On the way home from East Cork there were a few diversions! Number one, the cathedral in Cloyne. Cloyne was once the see city of the Anglican Diocese of Cork. The town is run down but the cathedral is marvellous - a great barn of a building full of interesting memorials, some quite unexpected:
a fierce looking lion and unicorn
an emu and kangaroo on the memorial of John Lawless who had resided in Queensland for many years
a vernacular Christ crucified
and an extraordinary monument to the Right Reverent William Bennett, zealous Vice President of the British & Foreign Bible Society; make of that what you will.
It make one wonder what one might fancy one one's memorial.

Next to the cathedral are the still impressive but mainly ignored remains of a round tower. St Colman was responsible for it, apparently, and was just finishing off the top when a woman shouted up to him, something in the lines of: Good work Colman. He was so flustered at being spoken to , especially by a woman , he leapt off the tower and landed up in a field about two miles away. Where he landed - guess what sprung up - yes a well! Our next destination. St Colman would be horrified to know that a woman is now in charge of the cathedral.

The extra is not the well but a submerged dolmen, looking enigmatic and obtuse at the waters edge,

I'm writing this on Monday - we have friends coming to supper so will catch up at some point.
