Dents Gloves

I pass this memorial stone twice a week. It is on the church next to the Museum, now called Riviera Life, but once was a Wesleyan Methodist Church. Who was Sir Francis Lycett? I had not heard of him in connection with Torquay’s history.
Google told me he was not from Torquay and was a prolific layer of Methodist church foundation stones.
He was a Worcester man, and he joined the family firm. This  was Dent, Allcroft, and company - Dents Gloves. He built it up to be very successful, and became a huge benefactor of the Methodist Church. One source said he helped found 40 churches throughout the country and laid 40 foundation stones, before his death in 1880.
Another member of the firm, John Allcroft, (1822 - 1893) also founded several Anglican churches in London. Maybe it was competitive.
