The Four Horsemen of the Apocalyse

Are pestilence, war, famine and death. They all seem pretty familiar in 2022.  This is a woodcut from 1498, by Albrecht Durer. A fabulous exhibition at the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath - they have very cleverly curated a sequence of prints across 7 centuries, which they already had in their possession. Together with a history of making prints.
The first extra is made in 1912, but it is an engraved copy of a portrait by Gainsborough of two musicians, painted in the mid 1700s. Some people could newly afford some decoration for their home, and prints were a way to provide affordable art, but from an exceptional original.
The second extra is by Howard Hodgkin which is an etching and aquatint, made in 2006, called ‘For Jack’
