So This Is Marykirk

Today looks like the finest day of the next few days.

Pat made a picnic and we headed off to explore Marykirk. It is a place that has many signs to several different roads leading to Marykirk.

We selected one route and drove through open countryside till we reached our goal. It is a small settlement. The main attraction is a historical one and consists of the church and Cemetry.

The church is the Old Parish Kirk of Aberluthnott. There are several display boards to inform the visitor.

The cemetery has been ‘in business’ for over 1000 years. The rising ground levels are at the height of the boundary wall. There is an extensive collection of gravestones and burial vaults.

Judging by the tilt away from vertical of many gravestones I imagine the ground is not very stable with several voids occurring where previous internments have collapsed.

The main photo shows a prayer and the extra shows some of the tilting memorial stones.

The area has a soundtrack made by Corbies, Ravens and Crows making a bit of a stramash.

We then headed over to the coast and enjoyed our picnic at Johnshaven Harbour.

Our exploration did result in us locating an interesting section section of the coastal path to walk on our next visit to the area.
