Martello Tower

Morning all,

....or as known in Leith as the 'Tally Toor'.
Had no idea what this was but googled it and amazing history on them.

The Tally Toor, famous in Leith as everyone can remember swimming out to it on beach picnics as it was built on rock just off the shoreline. The land was reclaimed round about it and forms part of Leith docks now.

Once part of a series of fortifications built around the world from America to Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka....the French built their own version using optical telegraph's to communicate between towers. With a cannon mounted on top, it gave 360 degree cover
