Rhyne

Rhyne is a Somerset word for a drainage ditch and the Levels are cross-crossed by thousands of them. We passed this one on our walk across to Sharpham ponds this afternoon.

On the way a farmer was in one of the fields checking on some relatively new-born calves. He came over for a chat, regaling us for half an hour or so with information about the different types of beef cattle he has on his various areas of land and the problems of farming, re-wilding and dogs that are let off leads. While he talked, the cattle ambled over to say hello, nuzzling us with their grassy breath and trying to nibble our boot laces. It was all very entertaining.

The morning was spent on the garden, finishing clearing the bed we started on on Friday.
