Bucket Fountain

So as I keep mentioning, I love Wellington's Cuba Mall. This photo is of an iconic Wellington sculpture- the Bucket Fountain. The Bucket Fountain is quite old, designed in the late 1960s and still a popular (or unpopular) piece of Wellington art.

Apparently locals tend to hate the sculpture because it doesn't actually work as designed, see the top four buckets get filled with water and as they fill they tip into the buckets below and as they filled they tip into the ones below them and eventually the huge blue bucket at the bottom tips over. In reality what happens is when the buckets tip, about half the water goes into the bucket below, and half the water splashes out onto the foot path, the result is a constant state of water trickling down the drain.

The fountain was also featured in the news when Elijah Wood, Dominica Monahan and Billy Boyd climbed to the top of the fountain and peed off of it when filming Lord of the Rings here, apparently Peter Jackson gave them a reprimand stating that he grew up with that fountain and it was disrespectful, good onya Peter!

Anyway I love the fountain.
