The East Coast Main Line railway in Scotland between Edinburgh and Aberdeen, turns inland around four miles from the coast to the north of Montrose, and crosses the River North Esk on the Aberdeenshire  and Angus border via a thirteen span viaduct as it curves to the west of the village of Marykirk. The viaduct was built by the Caledonian Railway in 1849 and the stone piers originally supported timber arches which were replaced by cast-iron steel trusses around 1880.
