Spoor of the Bookworm

Daffodils in the ditch

...and suddenly its Spring and there's colour everywhere in odd places. These daffs have sprouted in a patch by the side of the road; an irregular little patch, solid yellow at the centre but with little groups wandering off at the edge of the crowd and isolated individuals entangled in the still winter-barren hedgerow. I wonder how they came to be here in this untidy splash between a road and a field. A couple of hundred yards away on the other side of the road is another similar clump. Were the bulbs tossed here by some itinerant "Johnny - Daff - Seed" as he hoboed out of town? Did they fall from an unstable truck load swerving along in a high speed getaway? Will we ever know....
