SNOW LILLY

A Blip from the past...sad news to report. Snow Lilly, North America's oldest living polar bear (in human care) has gone to the Great Seal Hunting Ground.  She lived at the zoo in Milwaukee and was 36 years old.

EXTRAS: I have a LOT of Snow Lilly photos over the years. Here she is during Happy Times in her pool. One of the things she LOVED to do was play with a big, green float that commercial fishermen use to float their nets. She would hug it, use her weight to push it under water several feet, then let go and it would rocket up and out of the water and she'd try to catch it. Looks rather like a big watermelon, does it not?

In one of the shots you can clearly see her black skin under her fur. For those of you who were unaware, polar bear hair is hollow and translucent which allows sunlight to penetrate right through it and the generated heat to be absorbed by the black skin. Kinda like a solar heater.
