Place of the Dead

If you lived in the town of San Pablo Villa de Mitla, it's possible that from your patio you could look right down into the archaeological site of Mitla, as the town has grown up around the ruins. The Grecian style frets that adorn the facades of the stone buildings are entirely different from those at Monte Albán, only 20 or 30 miles away. (depends if you are a crow or a driver)
It's believed that the Mixtec people, possibly moving away from the Aztecs in central Mexico, created this unusual style. They populated this area in the years around 1350 A.D. and live here to this day.
We could roam through mazes of hallways, peer into underground tunnels, and wonder at how they built such structures of giant stones. I know these questions are asked in many parts of the world, and the answers will probably always be a mystery.
One of the things I like so much about this area is that many traditions of the past cultures are still alive. Altered probably, but part of present day life.
I noticed that the designs are repeated in other types of artwork.
