Back on the Wainwright trail

We decided to add the two most South Easterly of the Wainwrights to our tally today. Drove down to Sadgill (which is about 40 miles from Keswick - really out of the way! - and walked Grey Crag and Tarn Crag (Sleddale). Winds on the tops were forecast at 35mph + and I reckon that was a conservative estimate. We had originally thought of extending the walk to take in another two tops near Haweswater, but in the high winds we decided against that.

The ground around Grey Crag and Tarn Crag usually so boggy that it is almost impassable, but with April having only 50% of it's usual rainfall, it was pretty easy - and very pleasant walking. The light was lovely, which made the area feel like one I'd return to happily (not the case last time we did these). On the top of Tarn Crag is a curious structure, a survey tower which was constructed when the Manchester corporation was building the Haweswater Aqueduct as part of the pipeline to Manchester. It must be one of the most amazing summit structures in the Lakes.

Grey Crag: 189/214
Tarn Crag: 190/214
