There Was I

thinking I'd be left
wallowing in my own insignificance
and loneliness
when you came along.

I'd got it all planned.

It was just going to be me
and that big impressive sky
which I'd gaze up at
during the day
and contemplate how and why
it had to be that way.

And now it doesn't.

Though sometimes I go away
or you have to go away
so occasionally
there's a bit of that standing there
waving my branches around aimlessly.

That's not a bad thing.

It serves as a reminder
of what might have been,
and it means I'm grateful,
thankful, appreciative
of what is and of what has

come to pass.
