Stirling Old Bridge

I have had a few flying visits to Stirling over the last few weeks, and until now, I’ve not had a chance to stop and photograph Stirling Old Bridge.

This stone bridge replaced various wooden ones, including one where Sir William Wallace defeated the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.

The bridge crosses the River Forth at what was an important crossing being the lowest bridging point for around four centuries. Initially, there would have been arches at either end with a defensive gate nearer the burgh end.

After the new bridge was built in 1833, the old bridge was closed to wheeled traffic and has been classed as a listed building since 1965.

I love how depending on what side of the bridge you stand on, you can get great views of either Stirling Castle or the Wallace Monument behind it.
