I think it was Neil MacGregor, in his brilliant book on the history of Germany, who observed that German towns had triumphal arches that celebrated victory over other German towns. This rather lovely example is in Potsdam. And it's called the Brandenburger Tor, but it's not *that* Brandenburg Gate. Found it hard to pick one view, see the extras...
