old stone stories

King Favila, the son of King Pelayo, ruled Asturias from his seat in Cangas de Onís till his death in 739. He died, apparently, killed by a bear, while out hunting. These photos are from the church of San Pedro de Villanueva, on the outskirts of Cangas de Onís, which was built in the 12th and 13th centuries.
The main photo shows King Favila setting off on the bear hunt. Extra 1 is a close-up, in stone, of his goodbye kiss from Queen Froiluba. Extra 2 shows the fight with the bear, whose teeth look fearsome even in stone. Extra 3 shows Queen Froiluba lamenting his death. Extra 4, apparently, shows demons and angels bargaining for his soul. Extra 5 shows the entire arch, and extra 6 shows the church from the south.
The church is now part of the Parador de Cangas de Onís.
