The Whole Day Stretched Out Before Us

Fabulous day. Sun shining. Up early. We felt like we owned the world.  Drove to Slapton Ley listening to Desert Island Discs, the subject was Fiona Hill - a modest, unassuming, courageous, and  very interesting foreign affairs specialist., who stood up to Trump.
At Slapton we were looking for an off course night heron. There was no one else there so
obviously it had gone, but we enjoyed the peaceful scene by the lake for a while, and then carried on to start our walk from Stokenham. We sat outside drinking coffee first at the Church House Inn and enjoyed seeing the swifts ( my first of the year) overhead, and the swallows and martins  embroidering the sky, thinking how lucky we were, and to have the whole day stretching out before us. It is a favourite walk which takes you inland through beautiful lanes and paths to Start Point and the lighthouse, and then back along the coast path to Torcross. Butterflies were everywhere, and stonechats, whitethroats, linnets, cirl buntings, and the bird of the day, a yellowhammer. At Torcross we had fish and chips at the Start Bay Inn,  returning to Stokenham, and the car, through an old English churchyard in beautiful evening light.
