Survivors

These beech trees mostly survived the great storms 4 months or so ago. There are several casualties. However, in the wood around which we walking, many hundreds of commercial pines are still in wild disarray, as though there'd been a game of spillikins with 20m trees. Trees uprooted, broken in half, leaning on each other; years of forestry work, and not much sale for the wood except as pulp. There has been a lot of cutting and removal done already to make the roadways safe.

We walked in the morning, getting back before the heavy rain started. Visitors in the afternoon.
