The Emigrants

Drove north to the Orkney ferry today. Stopped at Helmsdale. This is a memorial to the men, women and children who emigrated from the Highlands. Many of them were 'cleared' by landlords who could make more money by grazing sheep on their traditional lands. The enscription ends 'Their voices will echo for ever through the empty straths and glens of their homeland.' Like many of today's 'economic migrants' they went on to contribute hugely to the new places that they settled.
