Sleeping Mars

Before heading home I had to catch the other "Caravaggio from Utrecht" reproduced by 'De Strakke Hand' the collective of painters what would be named in English as "The Focussed Hands" ~ here the 2nd piece of their project called "Caravaggio from Utrecht" what is that painters from Utrecht who lived in the early decades of 17th C and had seen works that were inspired by the Italian painter/artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) and they like Rembrandt van Rijn, were also touched by the chiaroscuro lightfall Caravaggio had registered in his paintings.. so they started to paint with that light in mind and thus are called the "Utrecht Caravaggists".

Here's a repro from Hendrik ter Bruggen who'd painted "Sleeping Mars" in 1629 ~ the painters collective "Focussed Hands" reproduced this copy on a wall in Utrecht city alsmost 400 years later. They have the cooperation of the Utrecht Central Museum, 'to bring the arts from the museum to the walls of town'.
What a lovely project and cooperation they have there!
