Sveti Stefan

At last, a day of doing nothing but relaxing on the terrace and walking down the (many) steps to the beach to look at Sveti Stefan at close quarters.

This little island, connected to the mainland by a narrow tombolo, was once a fortified  town with up to 400 inhabitants. By the early 1950s, this had dwindled to only 20 people, so the communist government decided to resettle them and turn the island into an luxury casino and resort - the vagaries of communism still confound me - frequented by almost every celebrity of the time.

Since the break up of Yugoslavia it’s fare has changed, and it was taken over by Aman luxury hotels. Whilst the island’s character has apparently been restored, it’s only accessed by hotel guests - at quite a price. Currently the whole island is closed, a sad and melancholy place. Aman locked its doors in 2020 and there’s as yet no indication of when it will reopen.

Meanwhile, we enjoy the view from our terrace and the welcoming Drago restaurant where our delightful waiter keeps bringing us ‘extra’ portions as a ‘gift’. Our pints (50cl) of beer ordered as we recover from our clamber up the steps, suddenly double for example!

It’s been a delightful and relaxing stay; much needed after our bird watching excursion yesterday!

My main is obviously a sunset, but there’s an extra morning scene showing the island in more detail

More on the island below.
