Tunnel Vision

This morning my friend Kat come out to Peebles for a walk - through the Neidpath Tunnel! It was a lovely sunny morning so we went up over the Manor Sware and looped around down to the River Tweed, over the Neidpath Viaduct and into the tunnel! Kitted up with head torches we were able to see our way and to get a great view of the brick-lined tunnel - which in most part was in a good condition.

We found the mysterious chamber in the northern wall of the tunnel and think it was either a storage area or a place for people mending the track to jump into to miss passing trains!

This photo was taken looking out at the eastern end of the tunnel and you can see there is quite a lot of water seeping through the bricks and causing them to crumble. It would be an expensive job to re-seal it but it would be such a loss for the tunnel to become structurally unsound and closed to public access, or for it to collapse.

In this picture you can see the lovely horse-shoe shape of the tunnel.
