Long Meg

We were alerted to this place by PaulaJ’s tenth anniversary blip a few weeks ago. It is a magical mysterious place which you can read all about here
It’s an ancient stone circle in the middle of, well, nowhere really near the small village of Little Salkeld north east of Penrith. Dates back to about 1500 BC . The large upright stone is sandstone  , the smaller “daughters”  are granite. It’s about a hundred metres across and the extra is the best I could do without a drone camera to show the whole thing. The little figure in the distance gives some sense of scale I think. Meg has some circles on her flanks which I don’t really know anything about.
Legend has it that  Meg , a witch, and her daughters were turned to stone for dancing on the sabbath.
I love the wildness of the place and total lack of any facilities or really any publicity about it.
We carried on with our circular walk and passed along the Eden River where we saw Lacey’s caves, second extra , and the viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle railway, but it was barely visible through the trees so no photo I’m afraid.
The promised tea room in Little Salkeld had closed down but, Saddlebacks coffee stall on the Village Green in Longwathby provided superb refreshments on the way back.
