Giant Lacewing

After yesterday's mega day out, I was glad of a quiet morning, photographing a couple of interesting insects found during the course of the survey. The most spectacular was this Giant Lacewing Osmylus fulvicephalus which is about 25mm in length and is usually found on streamside vegetation, especially in woods. Its larvae hunt in wet moss. It's generally a local species, most common in southern Britain.

In the afternoon Alex and I headed out to Old Sulehay Forest to complete the last of the NVC quadrats - we've now covered the full range of variation within the woodland - detailed data analysis will wait until the autumn!

A family Indian takeaway completed the day - a lovely way to end the busiest week of the year (so far!).
