Bird cherry

A blossoming bird cherry by the outflow from Loch Pityoulish.

Bird cherries which flower later than geans are abundant on Speyside particularly in damp.places. The tree is also known as hackberry or hagberry and is associated with witches so that the wood is seldom used. In times of plague branches of birdcerry were laid across doorway to keep the plague at bay.
