Feeling slightly disorientated by a very early departure from the Premier Inn in Saffron Walden and salmon teriyaki for breakfast at the airport, we nonetheless managed to find ourselves sitting at a café in the Plaza Mayor in Madrid by lunchtime, enjoying a leisurely Café con Leche (in my case) and a cheeky vermut (in hers.) Suitably fortified, we enjoyed some fine fishy tapas at the Mercado de San Miguel and then had a bit of a wander until the nuns at the Monasterio del Corpus Christi were open for biscuit sales. Later on we went to Flamenco at Cardamomo and then had drinks at the Cerveceria Alemana in nearby Plaza Santa Ana – one of Hemingway’s old haunts, apparently – before making our unhurried way home to Malasana through Chueca …
