A concrete love affair

Flughafen Berlin Templehof

A lovely day in Berlin.. We visited Tenplehof Park which was formerly the Templehof Airport runways and taxiways. There were bikes and pedal powered machines of many varieties for hire and we rode around for half on hour on two, really fast with the wind behind!

On the way back to the U Bahn station I strolled over to take a picture of the now disused airport building and just happened to find an office for tours of the buildings interior! By pure amazing chance the English tour was just about to start so we paid up and it turned out we were the only two on this tour.

We spent two utterly fantastic hours looking at old pictures with our guide, learning about its fascinating history and touring this vast building! We were guided through the former spaces that the US army once used as a base with dance halls gyms, squash courts and even a sauna. We visited the fallout shelters, the below ground railway line and its freight terminals, the baggage handling decks with in-tact conveyors and most fantastically awesomely amazingly beautiful was here the arrivals hall where hundreds of travellers occupying the space would have once been a common sight.

If you do only one thing in Berlin, make it this tour! So fantastic I barely have the adjectives to describe how interesting, how rewarding and enriching our visit was!
