Spent the day with StorksRock replacing a fencepost for our neighbours. We thought it would be a fairly easy job. But when we tried to dig out the old concrete that was holding the old post in we got a bit of shock. We kept digging down but could not find the bottom. In the end after much cursing we had a lump of concrete that could also have been used as the monolith in 2001 - a space odyssey. (Well OK it was about 2ft long by 1ft square). Of course now the problem was how to remove it from the hole. We resorted to ancient Egyptian building techniques and dug a slope put a plank down there, laid the monolith on it an put a rope around it. StorksRock levered with a crowbar while I put the rope over my shoulder and pulled. Unfortunately nothing moved. This was when we realised the Egyptians had a plentiful supply of slaves to pull on the rope...

So StorksRock had a brainwave - why remove the old concrete at all ? So we dug a bigger hole and laid it on its side, and it is still in there. In fact the new post is sitting on the old concrete with our new concrete on top. So will be fun the next time it needs to be changed.

Though the whole episode the Robin was taking an interest in the worms that were appearing in the disturbed earth. Sometimes he was perching within a foot of where we were digging, Keeping us sane...
