Why was the sand wet?

Because the sea weed!

There’s a huge issue around this part of Mexico at the moment, with the influx of sargassum.

Our hotel works endlessly to remove if from the beach, but other places aren’t so lucky and you find huge piles like this.
It’s a constant battle and although it’s off our beach, you still have to wade and swim through it through the shallows.

We enjoyed our beach bed today. So much so, we’ve booked another one for our last day here on Saturday.

We’d got up early to go and grab a guide and snorkel with the sea turtles but that turned into a disaster!
Mr A’s life jacket was too big, so it was lifting up over his head and shoulders and actually pushing him under the water.
Our guide was a lovely lady, but didn’t speak any English. My Spanish isn’t great so it was hard to communicate with her.
The sea was also pretty rough, so by the time I’d swum out to where the turtles were, I was exhausted. We decided to turn back.

Once we’d returned to the beach, we clocked just how many groups of people there were in the water. We recalled a passing comment from another guide a couple of days ago who said there’s no swimming allowed on Sundays to give the turtles a chance to de-stress. Seeing the quantity of people around the turtles, it’s no wonder they get stressed! We didn’t want to add to that.

Most of our day was spent snorkelling and it was absolutely amazing. We followed the advice of our beach butler, Ivan, who pointed us in the right direction towards huge swathes of coral.
We also borrowed a couple of life jackets from the hotel and this proved to be an absolute game changer!
The fish there were absolutely incredible and extremely curious; many swam along side us and some cheeky ones swam right up to our faces.
There was a lone sea turtle, but again the frenzy of people trying to rush to see it just kicked up the sand and made the water murky. Mr A caught it on the GoPro but I couldn’t see anything.

It was tough to choose a photo for today, but I went with this one to show it’s not all blue skies and sunshine ;-)
