Glen Sannox

"I care to live only to entice people to look at Nature's loveliness."

Today is the first John Muir Day in Scotland commemorating the 175th anniversary of his birth in Dunbar, Scotland. His family emigrated to America where he is held in very high regard so now there are plans in Scotland today to recognise his philosophies and achievements as the first conservationist in the world and founder of the National Parks movement in America. This painting by a friend, of the lovely Glen Sannox on the island of Arran, sums up another of John Muir's sayings.

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn."
