Fort Bovisand

Plymouth, along with its sister port – Portsmouth, were the recipients of the largest British construction project of the Nineteenth Century in the form of a ring of forts guarding the ports, and especially the naval bases, from attack. Today the forts which surround Plymouth are in various stages of renovation and decay. Some are now used by business, some for social activities and some have been neglected and have partially returned to nature. One of the forts has even become a buddhist temple. The fort shown here today is Fort Bovisand  which was once heavily armed and protected the eastern approach to Plymouth Sound. A major development project has begun which will see the site transformed, with new housing, cultural, educational and social amenities. It will be interesting to see how far this is realised! This is a view from behind as there is currently no public access. From the front it is actually a very interesting site. It also has spectacular views across Plymouth Sound to Cornwall.
