Patagioenas fasciata

Band-tailed pigeon. This bird was at the top of the dead willow tree on the other side of the fence, way up high, on the perch usually occupied by visiting hawks. And I will be forgiven for being confused, as this was a very large pigeon and I thought it might be a hawk just from the weight of it, but then it had a very distinctive pigeon shape, even without my glasses. Thank goodness for a good zoom and a bird book. In the Extra he's showing off his band-tail.

Our heat wave is lessening, with an 87 degree high here. Still hot enough to keep me from doing much work, but delightful to sit out and listen to the busy mockingbirds.
