Ancient chestnut tree

This tree was amongst a group of old chestnut trees at Petworth Park. Some of them are said to be over 800 years old. They are all looking their age with some hollowed out and others that have lost branches in stormy weather. Another has been hit by lightning. Yet they are still there. Some younger trees have now been planted in that area but it will take some time before they make a good size.

The extra is of the flowers of the tulip tree. A magnificent tree with leaves that resemble the shape of cats faces and bright yellow flowers.
